Forensic Entomology Comes of Age in India
Forensic Entomology deals with the role of insects in solving homicidal cases. This branch of science is in its nascent stage in India. To put it into practice, a detailed knowledge about carrion fauna with respect to life history, habits, geographical distribution, taxonomy, morphology of immature stages, ecological relations etc. is a must. To generate this baseline data, studies on the process of decomposition and insect fauna of decaying rabbit carcasses were carried out at Punjabi University, Patiala, Punjab, by Dr. Meenakshi Bharti. The objective of these studies was to identify the insect species visiting carcasses, describe the decomposition process and determine insect succession patterns in different seasons. The results of the present work represents the very first attempt at studying the seasonal insect succession on carrion in India. The outcome of this work has provided a basis for understanding the ecology of our local carrion insect community which is a vital pre-requisite to the application of medico-criminal forensic entomology in our country.
